Place a red over a baulk pocket and with the side of your cue squeeze the cue ball obliquely down the cushion. This has the effect of propelling the cue ball along the cushion whilst at the same time imparting side on it. To acquire the amount of side needed it may be necessary for the cue ball to be positioned in the baulk area. It is advisable to use care so as not to damage your cue.
